Lodge No. 45 — F. & A. M.
Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania & Jurisdiction
Welcome, Brethren and Honored Guests. Light of Elmwood Lodge No. 45 extends Masonic greetings to all who enter our portal. This Lodge stands as a beacon of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth — pillars upon which our fraternity has stood since its founding in 1918. We are proud servants of Prince Hall Masonry and the communities we call home.
Prince Hall (c. 1735–1807) was a pioneering abolitionist and leader of the free Black community in Boston, Massachusetts. On March 6, 1775, Hall and fourteen other free African Americans were initiated into Freemasonry by a British military lodge attached to a regiment stationed near Boston. After American lodges refused to recognize Black Masons, Hall received a formal charter from the Grand Lodge of England in 1787 — establishing African Lodge No. 459, the first recognized Black Masonic lodge in the Americas. Today, Prince Hall Freemasonry stands as a worldwide fraternal order of hundreds of thousands of members, organized into Grand Lodges across the United States and internationally, dedicated to moral character, community uplift, and the universal bonds of brotherhood.
Our Story
Light of Elmwood Lodge No. 45 traces its beginnings to 1917 A.D. (5917 A.L.). Through a typographical error in the printing of the original charter, the Lodge's name appeared as "Pride of Elmwood" rather than "Light of Elmwood." The brethren labored Under Dispensation for one year, and the Lodge was granted its charter at the Annual Session of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania on August 9, 1918, under Grand Master Robert J. Williams.
Grand Lodge records noted that the Lodge was composed of the "best blood of Elmwood" — the Elmwood section of Philadelphia nearest Philadelphia International Airport.
From 1918 to 1950, the Lodge met at 3010 S. 86th Street in Philadelphia. Our first Worshipful Master, James W. Holloway, made this meeting place possible as the owner of the building. In 1950, the Lodge relocated to the Elmwood Community Improvement Association Hall at 87th Street and Erwig Avenue, before eventually finding a welcome haven at Saint Cyprian Episcopal Church, and later Saint Barnabas Episcopal Church Guild Hall.
Observing the Masonic significance of the number three — having known three temporary homes — the brethren resolved to establish a permanent residence. A property at 5026 Spruce Street, Philadelphia was secured for $16,500, with an agreement of sale executed September 29, 1965. The Lodge's home was dedicated February 13, 1966 under Grand Master B. Myoli Owens, and the cornerstone was laid April 28, 1968.
On November 17, 1973, the Lodge formally adopted Queen Alpha Chapter No. 93, Order of the Eastern Star of Pennsylvania. In May 1974, the mortgage on 5026 Spruce Street was burned — the building became the unencumbered property of Light of Elmwood Lodge No. 45, free of all debt. From its chartering in 1918 to this day, the Lodge has advanced through steadfast faith, disciplined labor, and fraternal unity.
